Training Program:

Nervous System

This module is designed for doctors who have never successfully completed the Stream 1 module and do not hold this accreditation. Accreditation requires you to attend the session and complete the assessment tasks successfully.

Successful completion of the module will lead to the award of the Nervous System accreditation.

Stream 2 –  If you have already successfully completed this module and you want to undertake continuing education, then you are encouraged to enrol in the Nervous System Stream 2 Module.

Stream 2 modules do not have any assessment requirements, and they will help you improve your proficiency by updating your skills in applying the AMA4 Guides and/or other prescribed assessment methods.

Module information

The module teaches the methodology in the Guides for evaluating permanent impairments resulting dysfunction of the brain, brain stem, cranial nerves, spinal cord, nerve roots, and peripheral nerves.

While much of the methodology is found in Chapter 4 of the Guides, the module also covers the approach required to use other parts of the Guides to assess certain impairments, particularly peripheral nerve injury.

The module covers

  • The methodology for assessing impairment of the forebrain includes evaluation of mental status, brain injury causing behavioural change, epilepsy, and major motor and sensory disorders
  • The methodology for assessing impairment from spinal cord injury and the approach to be taken when an alternative spine assessment has been conducted using Chapter 3 of the Guides
  • The methodology for assessing cranial nerve dysfunction, including the approach to be taken when a more specific method of assessment is available from another Chapter of the Guides (such as when cranial nerves affecting vision are involved)
  • The methodology for assessing peripheral nerves which includes the approach to estimate (or grade) the extent of damage of a peripheral nerve, including the branchial plexus.
